Nostalgia...

Remembering New York

As I traveled the crowded streets of uptown,

I noticed it had a way of making you feel bound to it.

It hit me when I took the cab from the hotel to Harlem.

Malcolm X Boulevard, Sylvia's, and Magic Johnson Theater still stick in my head.

That familiar and scenic view of bright lights and arrogance.

They say the sense of smell gives off the most powerful feeling of nostalgia.

As I embarked on the city that never sleeps, I could smell it in the air.

The backslapping scents of car exhaust, restaurants, and people, seemingly, from everywhere.

A combination of ethnic foods and free expression hit me the hardest, though.

It revealed how awe-inspiring life could be for a naive southern girl seeing the big city for the first time through her own eyes and not those of a movie camera.
