Anticipating Fall

Anticipation

When you knocked on my window this morning, I got excited.

I was expecting you. I was waiting for you.

I could feel your presence that morning, in the breeze.

You’ve always been cool like that. The way you swagger yourself in, all confident.

Wearing your gang colors of orange and gold,

Getting me so hyped up, I go out shopping for new clothes.

I even bought a new centerpiece to welcome you home. You are so refreshing.

Then your old rival shows up. Telling lies and making me uncomfortable.

Had me sweating, losing control, I started shedding my clothes.

“It’s time for you to leave,” I screamed.

“Not a chance,” he laughed at me. “At least for a few more days.”

Still mocking my discontent, he grinned and said, “I might even stay a few more weeks.”

You see, that old Summer is greedy like that. He arrives early, taking part of Spring’s time.

Then hangs around during Fall’s arrival just to tick me off.
